Giannis (Ionnis) Gallios is a PhD student in the Department of Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences at the University of Florida. He holds previous degrees in environmental and natural resources management from the Agricultural University of Athens in Greece and in Crop and Soil Sciences from the University of Georgia, USA, where his work focused on precision agriculture and irrigation management. His current research in the Soil AI Lab combines soil spectroscopy, Earth observation data, and decentralized machine learning approaches to model soil organic carbon, texture, and soil health indicators across Florida agroecosystems while protecting growers’ data privacy. By integrating field sampling, laboratory analyses, and geospatial AI tools, his work aims to provide farmers and land managers with practical, scalable tools to monitor soil functioning, quantify the environmental impacts of agriculture, and design management strategies that sustain both productivity and environmental integrity.
